Kaley's Rhetorical Response to Carol Dweck:1) Langston's main claim is that rhetoric is seeing the available means of persuasion and applying it to communication.
2) Her claim intends to show that persuasion can be used more fluently when obtaining the right form of language. 3) Langston's tone in the video remains calm and flat throughout the clip. The tone conveys the video to be seen only as informational with, little to none voice fluctuations. 4) She made this video to inform students and/ or teachers who wish to learn about rhetoric. 5) She begins the video with an introduction of rhetoric and follows that with a short history statement to include reliability. That is followed by forms of rhetoric and persuasion with examples to allow the audience to understand deeper. She follows this with Aristotle's appeals in persuasion and, closes the video with why rhetoric is important. 6) Langston's video was released onto a very large and influential platform and this already gains her some credibility. Below the video she includes a list of names of professionals that helped her produce the video. Her tone throughout the clip also makes the audience feel like she's very informed on the topic and they perceive that she is reliable. 7) She evokes a sense of curiosity and wonder into the audience. Some audience members may want to experiment with rhetoric and persuasive skills in their daily lives after watching the video. 8) Langston organizes her types of rhetoric into ethos, logos, and pathos along with some examples. For ethos, she used the example of Winston Churchill's address to congress as a form of ethos and proof of credibility (Langston 1:55). Another example she used was, Sojourner Truth's speech as a form of logos (Langston 2:59). 9) A rhetorical strategy that might have gone unnoticed is the background sounds and visuals. These sounds and pictures may give the audience an emotional connection to the information being provided or, the producers used pathos throughout the entirety of the video to connect the viewers to the information. In scene 3:40 a series of images of guns pop up on the screen with a small sound of drums playing in the back. Logos is also used a couple times in the video when she provides insight on past historical figure's beliefs on rhetoric. She uses this appeal to strengthen her argument. 10) Typically, when I am persuading someone, I use a little bit of every rhetorical appeal. I may persuade my audience by making them feel sorry for me, or I might give a list of facts about why I am correct, or I might even bring up people who agree with me who have a positive influence. Overall, a good argument can be represented through strong body language and confidence. |
